Swamp Buggy Races
USA (Naples)
Jan 2009
Florida Sports Park opens its doors to 70 fearless swamp buggy racers, challenging the world famous "Sippy Hole".
The emergence of strange-looking vehicles featuring huge balloon tires and gun racks began in the area during the 1930s and 1940s and was born out of necessity, there being no other effective way to penetrate the vast, boggy mire known as Collier county.
The first races involving this versatile "Swamp Buggy" started to take place around 1943, featuring a handful of local hunters racing only for first place. However, the competitive nature of these folk meant increasing numbers got involved, and by the late 1940s, 35 or so racers would gather before hunting season to race for a prize - usually a new shotgun donated by local merchants.
Today, contestants compete with equal fervour and the event has grown to incorporate traditions such as the Swamp Buggy Queen Pageant (the Queen is ceremoniously dunked in slimy mud after the race).
